V Edward Gallaudet (and a deaf girl).
In our ASL class we learned the story of how he was inspired to establish a school for the hearing impaired: One day Gallaudet saw some children playing together in a schoolyard -- except for one girl who stood alone to the side. When he went to investigate, he discovered that she couldn't understand him because she coulnd't hear him! This incident sparked his interest in communicating with the Deaf and eventually founding Gallaudet University.
