Ah. . . what a view! Here are the 28 oak trees for which the Oak Alley Plantation
is famous. The antebellum mansion in the distance was one of many that thrived
along the Great River Road when sugar was king.
One of
the 28 oak trees -- the trees at Oak Alley are 300 years old and will
live for at least another 300 years. >

What is this? An old fashioned Fly Shoo.
An attendant would stand in the corner of the dining room and pull a rope
to operate this large fly swatter, which would keep insects away from the
food and circulate cool air around the table.
This
is a "rolling pin bed." The mattress is stuffed with Spanish Moss,
which
would get so lumpy after use that it literally needed to be rolled flat
with a rolling pin in the mornings.>

crib. A night nanny was instructed to stand guard over the infant and protect
it from any bugs, rodents, or snakes that would inevitable enter the house
through open windows at night.
