to the fallen soldiers. 51,000 Americans died at Gettysburg during the 3-day battle. Robert E. Lee hoped to win a victory or acheive a stalemate at Gettysburg that would STOP the fighting; however, the Confederates lost the battle and the war continued another bloody 22 months.
